This whole adventure started with a desire to know where our food was coming from, what it had been fed and how it was raised. The only way to ensure this was to breed and raise it ourselves. We decided to start with pigs - so after hundreds of hours of research, many extended phone calls and countless false starts we found the breed we wanted, the Large Black. Exceptional pork, laid back, friendly temperament, hardy and excellent mothers. Now we had to find breeding stock! So just before Christmas 2013, 4 little piglets flew from Edmonton to Comox, much to the delight of the Westjet cargo crew. Pigs can fly! Petunia, Matilda, Daisy, and our boar Charlie. May 2014 saw the addition of Rosie, Buttercup, and Charlotte. 

          Since then we have also added meat chickens, Christmas turkeys, ducks, meat rabbits and our milk cow Clara Belle. Clara Belle not only provides us with milk, butter and ice cream but the pigs happily consume any extra! Our small flock of laying hens give us plentiful eggs, for ourselves and the pigs. 

          All the animals are free range, fed non-gmo feed, with no antibiotics or hormones. 

Next up is gardens and field crops. That will take us closer to our goal of being completely self sufficient for ourselves and feeding our animals. Minimal carbon footprint and eliminating the reliance on outside feed sources. The pigs are happily working on plowing up the areas we want to plant! Who needs a plow!
